Proactive Measures for Tornado Survival:

Comprehensive Guide on Preparedness and Action by Vangy Tonies

In the event of a thunderstorm, large air tubes formed when lightning strikes can touch the surface of the ground and form tornadoes. It is important to be aware of the dangers associated with tornadoes. During tornados buildings can be damaged, trees uprooted, vehicles moved, and everything in the tornado’s path will be destroyed. Hail, heavy rain, lightning, flash flooding, and lightning are all possible. It is possible for tornadoes to occur anywhere. You should not wait until the last minute to prepare for an emergency.

The National Weather Service has three key alerts to watch out for:

  • Tornado Watch: Prepare! It is possible for tornadoes to form in and around the watch area. Examine your emergency plans, inventory your supplies.
  • Tornado Warning: Act! There has been a tornado sighting or weather radar indication. There is imminent threat to life and property. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor.
  • Tornado Emergency: Seek Shelter Immediately! The National Weather Service’s highest alert level is tornado emergency. This alert is issued when a violent tornado has touched down and catastrophic damage has been confirmed, posing a serious threat to human life and property.

The family plan should include a type of survival gear and supplies to deal with the emergency. The plan should have enough survival supplies and survival tools and knowledge of usage for the duration of the emergency. FEMA and Red Cross recommend anywhere from 3 to 5 days.
